Earlier this year Spain's National Statistics Institute reported that out of the Country's 4.93 Million legal immigrants, 17% were Romanian nationals. With the total number of Romanian citizens now living in Spain standing at 840'682, they have overtaken the previous majority group - the Morrocans - who number 757,809.
Perhaps this growing figure is what has caused Spain to restrict the labor market for Romanians, due to the growing unemployment among its own citizens. Although as yet unconfirmed, a number of media sources are reporting that a final decision will be made at the end of the week, when Spain will notify the relevant EU institutions and the European capitals with regards to the situation.
However, Romanians who are already working here in Spain will remain unaffected by the measure.
Spain was one of the few Western European countries that opened up most of it's labor market after Romania joined the EU in 2007.
