"21 nations represented, 20 allowed to speak. This journalist knows that the greatest asset to man is freedom, why then should Gibraltar be treated any differently..."
When the team of 11yr old youngsters, brimming with a patriotic sense of worth went on stage to present themselves to the crowd they were immediately hoisted off stage to be replaced by the next in-line. What a world we live in that allows such a callous disregard for human dignity, this journalist understands that prejudice and discrimination happen. It is almost an integral part of humanity and the sad thing is that it seeps through to all aspects of our culture. What cannot be comprehended is the way it was employed by vindictive little Spaniards who feel that in order to truly take Gibraltar back they must attack the integrity of our country at a youth football tournament; how petty.
The procession of athletes is a moment when one can be proud of where they come from and rouse up a strong sense of national pride to help bolster moral. The Spanish organizers would have it differently, the Costa Blanca Cup tournament was home to 21 participating nations each carrying their own flag. Gibraltar's was taken and returned without the necessary pole to hoist it, had it not been for one being leant by another nation Gibraltar would have had to sit out.
21 nations represented, 20 allowed to speak. This journalist knows that the greatest asset to man is freedom, why then should Gibraltar be treated any differently simply because the Spanish dislike us. What will Caruana do this time to placate the Spanish, what will the government do to correct this wrong. I think it prevalent to assume nothing if the rest of their actions are to be taken into account. This pro-Spanish attitude that has done nothing but make us seem weak, weak enough to be thrown aside when it suits the Spanish ego.
Generalization is never an accurate form of description, and understandably there is a lot of hostility on both sides of the frontier but let us be honest; had a tournament such as this happened in Gibraltar we would never have been so cruel.
