Spain's National Institute of Statistics (INE) has released data today, revealing how for the first time the country is loosing more people to emigration than it is gaining from immigration.
For the year to date records show how 27,771 more people left the country than arrived.
Before the property crash and resulting economic crisis of 2008 almost 1 million people arrived in Spain every year.
The trend began in January, when the population was estimated to stand at 46.152 million. By July, the figures were estimated at 46.125 million, with emigration outpacing immigration by 70,759 people.
A falling birth rate has also been blamed for contributing to the reasons behind the slump in figures.
