Football players in Spain' top two divisions have threatened strike action over the coming weeks unless a new collective bargaining agreement is not signed.
The head of the Spanish Football Players Association, Luis Rubiales, made the announcement to the press yesterday, and was supported by around 100 players representing all 42 clubs in the top two divisions of the Spanish Football League.
Top level players from the Spanish national team, such as Barcelona captain Carles Puyol and Iker Casillas and Xabi Alonso representing Real Madrid also attended the meeting.
Rubiales said about 200 players will be owed a total of 50 million euros by the start of the season - an increase from 12 million euros owed to around 100 players for the same period last year.
The Association has concerns that clubs will be unable to meet the required payments to cover the salaries.
The 2011 / 2012 season is due to commence in two weeks time.
