A court has ordered the release of a Catholic Youth Volunteer detained on suspicion of plotting a gas attack on the streets of Madrid. The planned attack by the Mexican Chemistry student was intended to target those protesting against the visit of Pope Benedict XVI to the capital to take part in the Catholic Church World Youth Day.
The presiding Judge, Fernando Andreu, did not bring any charges against Jose Perez Bautista, but has retained his passport and ordered him to report to a police station twice a day whilst he remains in the country. A formal investigation is continuing to look into the incident.
The Police became suspicious of Bautista earlier this week after they became aware of certain threats that he had made against those in opposition of the visit.
