Eurotunnel Strike Fails To Materialise

Mon 29th Aug 2011

The disruption to the Eurotunnel service that was expected over the course of this bank holiday weekend never actually materialised.

Industrial action was planned by a number of French Employees to coincide with what is traditionally one of the busiest weekends of the year, when many holidaymakers are driving from France and Spain back to the UK in time for the start of the new school year.

The strike was called by the French trade union, of which many employees are known to members, and called for an 8% pay rise for their members. In the end almost all employees ignored the call to strike and turned up for work as scheduled.

Eurotunnel had taken steps to ensure all passengers that had booked the service would still be able to make the journey, and had even put in place plans to send British staff to the French side to replace striking staff and had prepared for all available transport to be working at full capacity.

Despite a detailed 'plan for the worst', none of it was actually required to be put into practice.
