The Regional Government of Aragon has announced that it can not guarantee that they can extend the subsidy to Ryanair for flying into Zaragoza airport.
The Presidential Advisor for Aragon, Roberto Bermúdez de Castro, confirmed that the 4 million euro sum paid every year to the airline was no longer affordable.
This is partly due to the lack of profitability at the airport, and the fact that passenger numbers using the airport are far lower than was originally hoped for.
With the recently opened airport at Huescar being situated less than 45 kilometres away from Zaragoza, there is now more competition in the region, but falling numbers of passengers with a desire to fly there. Huescar airport has recently attracted criticism in the press - being branded a 'white elephant' and for remaining all but deserted with months at a time between commercial flights.
Ryanair have as yet made no statement and flights to and from Zaragoza remain on sale.
