Basque cities and the regional government are laying off hundreds of bodyguards in northern Spain as expectations grow for a lasting peace after four decades of separatist violence.
The withdrawal of 600 security officials who protect local politicians from shootings and bombings comes as a ceasefire by Basque separatist guerrilla group ETA reaches a one-year anniversary and death threats diminish.
