Yesterday the capital saw thousands of teachers take to the streets in protest over the Partido Popular regional government's latest round of spending cuts on the education system.
The demonstrators gathered outside government offices, angered by an order by the requirement for teachers to teach an two extra hours of classes a week, because it has suspended any hiring of temporary teachers to assist with lessons. They also claim that the 2 Billion Euro cuts to the education system will cause sever disruption and problems in other areas.
The Spanish regions take responsibility for their own education systems, with each region addressing the way in where and how spending cuts need to be made in reaching the regional deficit targets set by central government. However, the region's teachers claim that cuts are being made in the wrong way and in the wrong places.
