Speaking yesterday, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba forecast how the new wealth tax could result in an extra 1.1 billion euros in revenue by 2012, and could also generate 300,000 jobs for young people.
The PSOE electoral candidate and former cabinet minister was speaking to defend the new tax, following an attack by the Partido Popular who criticised it for only effecting the middle classes.
"How can they say such things without turning their faces in shame?" Rubalcaba asked the 20'000 strong crowd in Barcelona, who joined him in support of the tax.
He then went on to explain how there are 34 million citizens over the age of 18 in the country, but only 23 million tax return. He stated that only 160,000 taxpayers will be affected by the wealth tax, which is a temporary measure for 2011 and 2012.
