Spain's Ministry of Industry has confirmed that the Nuclear Security Council has decided to allow the Nuclear facility at Ascó, Tarragona, to remain operational for a further ten years.
The reactors passed the rigorous stress tests imposed by the European Union earlier this year following the radioactive leak at Fukushima, in the aftermath of the Japanese earthquake and Tsunami.
Spain currently has eight nuclear reactors on six sites, with Ascó I & II being commissioned in 1983.
The Facility has always been a target of protestors against nuclear energy following a radioactive leak at Ascó I in 2007.
Elsewhere, the owners of the Cofrentes Nuclear Power Station in Valencia - Iberdrola - announced that the plant operators would begin the refueling of the reactor, which may take around 2 months to complete.
