Spain's leading opposition party - the right wing P.P. - have accelerated their lead over the ruling Socialist PSOE party and look set to take an overall majority at November's general election.
An opinion poll published in the El Mundo daily Newspaper over the weekend saw the PP taking 47.4% of the vote against 31.8% for the PSOE, who were seen as being punished for the highest rate of unemployment in the EU and their mismanagement of the country's finances, which has resulted in the Prime Minister deciding not to stand for a third term in office.
The gap between the two parties has now seen the PP pull away from the PSOE 15.6 points - up from 14.8 points seen at the start of last month.
The latest opinion poll undertaken by Sigma dos was carried out between September 27 and September 30, before the Socialists' pre-election conference got underway in Madrid.
