Recent statistics released by AENA have revealed how 946'637 of the 2,117,923 arriving on the Island of Ibiza up to the end of August this year did so by flying with a low-cost airline.
This represents a 20.7% increase on the same period in 2010, meaning that the budget airline market held 44.7% of the market. In comparison mainstream airlines have seen a 4.6% decline in ticket sales with numbers falling by 54'239 over the same period.
Ryanair have enjoyed the largest growth in market share. In the whole of 2010 the Irish airline carried a total of 313'514 passengers to Ibiza, in second place behind Air Berlin with 355'762, whereas in the first eight month of 2011 alone Ryanair passengers numbered 406'428. This means that Ryanair carried 19.2% of all passengers to the island, and with a staggering 50.9% increase in traffic.
In January 2010, Ryanair flew 3,655 people, while in the same month this year they almost tripled that number to 12,056. July was July reached a peak with 80 265 passengers.
Spanish Airline, Vueling came in second place for number of passengers carried, followed by Easyjet.
