Ryanair's departure from Reus Airport later this month could result in the loss of almost 300 jobs, according to the Airport's CCOO Union representative, Paco Cebrián.
Lesmo handling currently services all of the ground requirements at Reus airport, and staff members are currently in negotiations with the company because after October 29, when Ryanair leave the airport, they will be left without any work to do.
Lawyers working on behalf of Lesmo are reviewing their contract with the airline, but the loss of 20 permanent and 40 temporary positions look highly likely.
However, a further 15 employees work cleaning the aircraft and 8 are employed to assist disabled passengers. Additionally, a number of shops, Cafes and Bars at the airport are expected to close in addition to car parking and security staff and employees of car hire companies.
Cebrián called for the Government to "Reach an agreement with Ryanair before the end of the month, which would keep at least two flights per week in Reus".
The Union official remained sceptical that other airlines may be interested in flying to the airport and went on to criticized the "lack of vision" of the Generalitat, but equally felt sure that Ryanair would regret their decision to leave the airport.
