El Hierro Volcano : US Authorities keeping quiet

Mon 10th Oct 2011

Actualidad Volcánica de Canarias (AVCAN), have posted warnings of futher possible volcanic tremors in El Hierro on their Facebook page, and are calling upon the on the National Geographic Institute (IGN) to confirm or disprove this eventuality.

Team Members from the National Geographic Institute (IGN) reported that they had recorded 36 such 'activities' between 00.00 and 07.30 over 1.5 in Magnitude, of which just 4 were strong enough to be felt on the surface by local residents.

A conference held between scientists, politicians and emergency personnel on the Island have decided to maintain a yellow alert, however, this weekends heightened state of seismic activity underneath the island - with an increased number of events at a greater intensity, and at a more shallow depth, has prompted officials to monitor the situation closely.

Between 20.11 and 20.14 last night four such movements of 1.6, 1.7, 1.6 and 1.5 magnitude were detected at a depth of 1 to 2 kms at a location south west of El Pinar, where most of this weekend's activity has been situated.

Meanwhile, chatter by Americans on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter has raised concerns that the United States Geological Survey (USGS) is not reporting on the situation, despite heightened fears that any volcanic eruption on the Islands could cause a Tsunami of up to 300mts. This would have the potential to reach the the Eastern seaboard of the USA in a matter of hours. Speculation is that the decision has been made to react to this threat reactively rather than cause panic unnecessarily.

The above clip shows predictions of what 'may happen' if the volcano on the neighbouring Island of La Palma were to erupt and cause a Tsunami.
