During the month of September Barcelona's El Prat airport saw a jump in traffic, reaching by 3,338,101 passengers, and representing a 17.7% increase on the same period in 2010. This was the third largest increase recorded across all AENA operated airports, who carried a combined total of 20.3 million passengers in September, at an increase of 7.5%.
AENA airports overall operated 197,688 flights during September, down 3.3%, and also transported 57,097 tons of cargo, up 9.1%, advised in a report issued by the company's Infrastructure Manager.
Madrid-Barajas airport remained the busiest airport, 4,516,189 passengers (1.2% more)
The airports that saw the largest percentage growth in September were Tenerife South, with 656,667 passengers, 23.8% more, and Seville, which increased passenger numbers by 24.9%.
Palma de Mallorca received 2,942,895 passengers (11.8% more), Malaga 1,374,463 (5.3%); Alicante 1,050,427 (7.7%); Ibiza, 852 252 (13.2%) and Gran Canaria, 760 137 (10%).
Furthermore, AENA mentioned how in the first nine months of 2011 there were over 160 million passengers arriving at Spanish airports - a 7.3% increase on the same period in 2010, there were more than 1.6 million flights - a 1.9% increase, and a total of 493,159 tons of cargo transported - 4.2% more.
Of the 20,231,860 commercial passengers served in September, 13 259,125 flew internationally ( a 10.9% increase) and 6,972,735 flew domestically (a 6.9% increase).
Barajas also lead the way with 37,418 flights ( a 2.1% increase), followed by El Prat, with 27,533 ( a 9.4% increase), Palma de Mallorca, with 20 758 (a 8.1% increase ); Malaga with 10 453 (a 0.6% increase), Gran Canaria, 8539 (a 10% increase), Alicante, with 7,485 (a 3.7% increase), Valencia, 5981 (a 11.1% fall) and Tenerife North, 5409 (a 5.8% increase).
