The Center for Scientific Research (CSIC), together with PEVOLCA Scientist, Joan Martí, have confirmed the existence of the underwater volcanic crater off the coast of la Restinga on the Island of El Hierro, which, they believe has the capability to "deliver about 40 million cubic meters of magma, maybe more."
Marti stressed that, according to latest seismic activity, the probability of an eruption occurring on land is very low.
Earlier, the Canary Islands Directorate of Public Health and PEVOLCA made the recommendation that the public did not enter the sea in the area around the eruptive stain until scientists know more about the situation.Recent data suggests that the average pH of water samples collected from the area are slightly lower than usual, with a higher concentration on sulfates.
