Spain today approved a credit line of 15 million euros for residents on the Island of El Hierro who have found themselves unemployed due to the ban on fishing around the Island following the recent Volcanic eruption. El Hierro has an estimated 50 families who rely on Fishing as their main sorce of income.
The news came just hours after the National Institute of Statistics (INE) posted the worst unemployment figures for the country in over 15 years, standing at 21.5%.
Government spokesman, José Blanco, said how the amount has been set by the Ministry of Finance, but may be extended further based on damage assessment and on demand, once the full effect of the ban is fully known. The measure were agreed by eight different government departments, to include aid to effected families, environmental regeneration, the promotion of tourism and subsideies and payments to the disasters and emergencies fund.
Today's interesting clip from Youtube discusses the seismic and volcanic activity from today / yesterday (remember the time differential between GMT / EST) >>>
