A meeting of PEVOLCA on the island of El Hierro earlier today has agreed to allow the evacuated residents of the the town of La Restinga to return to their homes - but only during hours of daylight. This is due to the high levels of Carbon Dioxide and other toxic volcanic gases being produced by the eruption as a result of the increased volcanic activity.
The Director General of Security and Emergency of the Canary Islands, Juan Manuel Santana, stated how the tunnel and the roads closed over the weekend will remain closed due to the risk of landslides.
PEVOLCA spokesman, Maria Jose Blanco, said that these episodes are "large bubbles formed by gas accumulation that grows slowly, for about fifteen seconds to collapse and release small particles." The first, which occurred at 18:00 hours, reached a height of 20-25 meters.
IGN scientists also revealed how the temperature differential from the water on the surface immediately around the eruption was just 11 degrees warmer than the average around the island.
