El Hierro : Scientists believe new vent may have opened

Sat 12th Nov 2011

According to the official website of the National Geographical Institute (IGN), a total of 20 Earthquakes have been recorded on the Island of El Hierro between 00.00 hrs and 16.00 hrs on Saturday.

Like the vast majority of seismic activity registered on the Island during this recent earthquake swarm, almost all of the earthquakes were located in the El Golfo bay area, off the coast of Frontera, on the northern side of the Island. Magnitudes ranged from 1.1 on the richter scale to 2.8 with the average depth being 20km, although the most shallow was just 16km.

The increased frequency of activity, but fall in intensity and the ongoing harmonic tremors are leading scientists to believe that a new volcanic vent may have been created, however, it may be at such a depth that no evidence of this is being shown on the surface.

Meanwhile on the opposite side of the Island, off the coast of la Restinga, PEVOLCA scientists have registered an increase in the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere, which is now reaching 1481 ± 37 tons per day - an amount equivalent to 4.35 times the normal amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) present on the Island.

Mary´s recent Youtube post shows some interesting footage of what has been happening on the island over the last couple of days >>>
