The National Geographical Institute (IGN) scientists studying the seismic activity on the Island of El Hierro have reported a further 14 earthquakes between 00.00 - 12.00 hrs GMT today.
All of the earthquakes were located around the El Golfo bay area, off the coast of Frontera on the north of the island and ranged from a magnitude of 1.5 on the richter scale to 3.2, with the stronger quake being felt by local residents, and with recorded depths varying from 20 to 16kms.
To the south of the island in the las Calmas bay area off the coast of la Restinga, where the volcanic eruption is currently active, scientists continue to monitor the activity. A recent fall in the Sulfur Dioxide content in the volcanic gas emissions is suggesting the possibility of a blockage in the vent, which may lead to a build up of pressure in the vent.Read further news stories about the El Hierro Volcano by clicking the link HERE .
