The National Geographical Institute of Spain (IGN) studying the recent seismic activity on the Island of El Hierro have reported a total of 17 Earthquakes in the past 24 Hours ( 09.00 GMT Weds - 09.00 GMT Thurs ). As with previous quakes over recent weeks, almost all of the activity was centered around the El Golfo bay area, close to the town of Fronter off the north coast of the island. Magnituted ranged from 1.6 to 3.1 on the richter scale, with depths varying between 23 and 17 kms.
Although by`normalīstandards this would count as significant activity, yesterday represented one of the quieter days on the island when compared to recent weeks.
A number of strong harmonic tremors occurred throughout the evening which scientists are continuing to monitor in the event of this signalling the opening of a further underwater volcanic vent off the coast of the island being created.Whilst residents of the town of La Restinga on the southern coast of the island have been reassured by reports of improving air quality and marine life returning to the la Calmas bay, two inlets remain closed due to poor air quality resulting from the volcanic gases.
Yesterday evening a committee of local business owners on the island met to discuss the financial aid package proposed by the government to assist them due to falling trade resulting from evacuations and a decline in tourism etc... Concerns are that it could take as many as 60 days for aid to reach those who need it.
