National Geographic Institute (IGN) Scientists observing the recent seismic activity on the Canary Island of El Hierro have reported a total of 24 Earthquakes between 10.00hrs Tuesday - 10.00 hrs Wednesday GMT.
As with almost all previous earthquakes over previous days and weeks, the majority of the activity was focused in the El Golfo bay area, off the coast of Frontera and to the North of the Island.
Two of yesterday´s earthquakes measure 3.3 on the richter scale, at depths of 17 and 22 kms, however residents only felt the effects of the more shallow of the two, which struck at 16.45 yesterday afternoon.Activities in general ranged from magnitudes of 1.6 to 3.3 and from depth of 15 to 22 kms.
With regards to the volcanic activity off the coast of La Restinga on the opposite side of the island, a sudden new explosive emission of gasses prompted observers to speculate that a new vent had been created, however this was later denied by the IGN.
You really have to see this Youtube clip posted by `yourdailyiron´ this morning, which shows a very good animated summary of the events on the Island over recent months >>>
The IGN have now recorded a total of 11´700 seismic activities since the recent earthquake swarm began on July 17th.
