El Hierro Volcano : 26th November

Sat 26th Nov 2011

Scientists from Spain's National Geographic Instititute (IGN) observing activity on the Canary Island of El Hierro haved recorded 4 separate earthquakes since midnight.

As with previous days and weeks, the epicentres were located in and around the El Golfo bay area, off the coast of Frontera on the Norther side of the Island. The magnitudes ranged from 1.6 to 2.7 on the richter scale and depths were at 19 and 20kms, which meant that none of the activity was felt by the residents of the island.

For the first time in many weeks, there were more occurrences of earthquakes throughout the rest of Spain than on El Hierro. Eight quakes have been registered in other areas of Spain - 5 of which were around Pamplona, registering an average of 1.6 on the richter scale, but at depths of just 2km. A separate quake in Pontevedra saw a quake registering 3.5 on the richter scale at a depth of 17 kms.

Meanwhile on the South of the Island, off the Coast of La Restinga, the volcanic eruptions have continued with a change in activity bringing with it an increase in the venting of smoke and other volcanic gases together with the prodction of pummice and other magmatic rocks.
