Scientists from Spain´s National Geological Institute (IGN) observing the recent seismic activity and earthquake swarm on the Canary Island of El Hierro have noted just three earthquakes over the last 24 Hours.
A in all recent days and weeks, the three activities were located in and around the El Golfo bay area, off the coast of the town of Frontera, to the northern side of the island. The first earthquake struck at 16.19 GMT yesterday and measured 2.1 on the richter scale, while being at a depth of 16km. The second quake came at 23.25 GMT with a 2.0 magnitude and a 20km, while the third quake came at 07.41 GMT this morning with a magnitude of 1.9 and at a depth of 21km.
Meanwhile a team of 25 scientists, technicians and crew representing the Geological Survey, the Unit of Marine Technology, CSIC, the Spanish Institute of Oceanography and the Navy Hydrographic Institute on board the Sarmiento de Gamboa oceanographic research vessel have begun collecting and analyzing images of the seabed of the El Golfo bay to see if there is a second eruptive vent, which may partly explain the fall in activity over recent days.A recent Youtube clip shows some interesting opinions and interpretations of recent data >>>
