Scientists from Spain's National Geological Institute (IGN) observing receent seismic and volcanic activity on the Canary Island of El Hierr have recorded just one earthquake over the course of the last 24 Hours.
The earthquake occurred in the El Golfo bay area, off the coast of Frontera, to the northof the island. It measured 2.0 on the richter scale and recorded at a depth of 21kms.
Today's lack of activity represents the quietest day for events recorded on the island since this latest earthquake swarm began on the 17th of July, and follows a trend of steadily declining activity over the last week. This single earthquake brings the total number of events recorded to 11'912.
The Volcanic activity to the south of the Island, off the coast of La Restinga has remained unchanged over recent days. The underwter eruption is still venting, causing the stain to continue to spread, whilst the production of smouldering pummice and magmatic rocks is continuing.
This recently uploaded Youtube clip shows a very good summary of the latest geological data concerning events of the island >>>
