Scientists from Spain´s National Geological Institute (IGN) monitoring the recent earthquake swarm on the Canary Island of El Hierro have monitored 5 earthquakes over the course of the last 24 Hours ( 12.00 hrs GMT Sunday - 12.00 hrs GMT Monday).
As with almost all of the seismic activity recorded over recent days and weeks, the earthquakes were located in and around the El Golfo bay area to the North and West of the town of Frontera, to the North side of the Island. Magnitudes ranged from between 1.6 to 2.4 on the richter scale and depths varied from between 19 to 25 kms. None of the earthquakes were felt by the residents of the island.
The weekend´s activity now brings the total number of activities in the earthquake swarm, which began on 17th July, to 11,915.Elsewhere, the Civil Protection Plan for Volcanic Risk (Pevolca) and the Government of the Canary Islands, confirmed how both the seismic activity to the north of the Island and the Volcanic activity to the south, off the coast of la Restinga was gaining a `degree of stability´.
This recent Youtube clip uploaded over the weekend shows how the smouldering volcanic rocks, known as `Pyroclasts´, are still being brought to the surface of the Atlantic, above the volcanic eruption >>>
