Ryanair has arrived at a provisional agreement with the Generalitat of Catalonia to continue to operate from the region's smaller airports of Reus and Girona for a further 5 years.
The agreement was reported this morning in the regional newspapers and is though to be worth a total of €8 Million per year - €40 Million in total.
Part of the agreement includes Ryanair's committment to bring 3 Million passengers per year to Girona and 500'000 per year to Reus airports.
In 2009 the airline carried some 7 Million passengers into the region, however, Ryanair have since favoured the region's El Prat airport at Barcelona. The comparatively low costs and popularity of El Prat has seen Ryanair increase passenger numbers since flights began, and the airline has contirbuted significantly to El Prat becoming the fastest growing airport in Europe. By the end of August Ryanair's growth at El Prat was 38% higher than the same period in 2010.
The agreement is also conditional on Reus and Girona airports not raising rates for the duration of the agreement.
