More than 191 million passengers flew to or from an AENA airport in Spain over the course of the first 11 months of the year, representing an increase of 6.1% on the same period in 2010. Almost two million flights were processed, up 1.1%, and a total of 612,723 tons of commercial freight was handled, up 3.4%, according to data released today by AENA.
Although the statistics for the year to date were encouraging, November's figures were down, handling 13,117,710 passengers at airports ( 2.1% less than the same month of 2010), operating some 147,728 flights (5.5% less), and transported 58,877 tons of cargo,(down 0.9%).
A statement issued earlier today by AENA went on to break the figures down, showing how of the total of 191,650,475 passengers using their airports in the year to date, 119,816,099 (+10.6%) flew internationally and 70,841,192 flew domestically (0.5% less).
Once again, the Madrid-Barajas was the flagship airport handling 46,035,999 passengers (0.5% less than 2010), followed by Barcelona-El Prat, with 31,974,093 (+17.8 %), Palma de Mallorca, with 22,063,288 (+8.2%), Malaga, Costa del Sol, 12,215,697 (+6.6%), Gran Canaria, with 9,546,515 (+10.9%) ; Alicante, with 9,447,627 (+6.1%) and Tenerife South, with 7,905,204 (+17.7%).
According to the report, the most significant increases were recorded in the airports of Santander (+20.3%), Fuerteventura (+19.3% more), Seville (+18.8% more), Barcelona-El Prat (+17.8% more ) Tenerife South (+17.7% more) and Santiago (+14.8% more).
In terms of flight numbers, of the 1,997,529 registered between January to November 2011, 1,745,920 were commercial (2.9%), of which 912,286 were international routes (8.1%) and National 833 634 (2.2% less).
Madrid-Barajas was also the busiest airport with 396,926 (0.9% less), followed by Barcelona-El Prat, with 281,115 (+9.6%), Palma de Mallorca, with 173 282 (+3.9%); Malaga-Costa del Sol, with 101 462 (+2%), Gran Canaria, with 100,987 (+7.4%) and Alicante with 71 774 (+2.3%).
Among the largest increases in flight numbers were Fuerteventura (+13.4%), Tenerife South (+12%), Barcelona-El Prat (+9.6%), Ibiza (+9.1%), Santiago (+6.8%) and Lanzarote (+6.2%).
In the same January - November period AENA also recorded a total of 612'723 tons of cargo being transported, of which 477,984 tonnes were shipped internationally (+5.3%) and 134'738 domestically (+2.9%).
