Almost on-quarter of those living in Spain are doing so conditions of near-poverty, according to the Chairman of the European Network Against Poverty and Exclusion in Spain, Carlos Susias.
A recent report has shown how around 10 Million of the 47,150,819 population of Spain (According to 01.01.2011 padron) are surviving on less than 500 euros a month, with Two million of this number being in a state of 'severe poverty', surviving on less than 300 euros per month.
The Networks puts the threshold of 'Poverty' as households living on less than 60% of the country's average income.
However, the outlook for 2012 is even worse, which has prompted Susias to launch an appeal to public sector authorities about the need for investment in social security systems, and not just in cutting back on public spending.
"The safety net that public bodies have for providing welfare to the poor has almost been emptied", he warned.
