Scientists from Spainīs National Geological Institute (IGN) who have been observing the seismic and volcanic activity on the Canary Island of El Hierro have had the quietest week since the recent Earthquake swarm began on July the 17th - almost 5 months ago to the day.
Over the course of the last 7 days ( 12.00hrs Friday 9th - 12.00hrs Friday 16th ) just 3 earthquakes have been recorded. As in previous weeks, the activities were centered around the El Golfo bay area, off the coast of the town of Frontera on the northern side of the island. Magnitudes varied from 1.7 to 2.1 on the richter scale, with recorded depths varying between 21 - 22 kms.
By contrast, 2 months ago earthquake numbers were reaching as many as 80 activities per week, with magnitudes reaching as high as 4.2 on the richter scale.Carmen Lopez, speaking on behalf of the IGN earlier this week, spoke of the chances of activities recurring as being "unlikely".
However, the volcanic activity to the south of the Island is showing no signs that it is ready to end. PEVOLCA report that in the Las Calmas bay area off the coast of La Restinga, the underwater Volcanic eruption is continuing along with frequent harmonic tremors.
The IGN are expected to maintain a presence on the Island to monitor activities for the foreseeable future.
