Spain's Minister of Development, Ana Pastor, is due to meet with the President of the region of Murcia, Ramon Varcarcel, in Madrid next week.
One of the key points scheduled for discussion is the need to tie up the loose ends surroundiing the region's Corvera International Airport, specifically it's ongoing compensation negotiations with AENA for the closure of San Javier airport.
Another issue on the agenda is the arrival of the AVE high-speed railway network in the region, notably the Chinchilla-Cartagena line and which is expected to require an investment of 80 Mln Euros.
The regional candidate for the UPyD, Rafael Sanchez, expressed his concern over the 6.4% drop in passenger numbers at San Javier last year, where numbers fell to a five-year low of 1.262 million. Sanchez believes the results are 'very negative', considering that the rest of Spanish airports traffic have seen passenger numbers increase by 6% over the same period. "Alicante's El Altet airport, which is our closest point of reference, has seen an increase of 5%," he told the press.
Sanchez continued that "this does not look encouraging, just a few months ahead of the planned opening of Corvera."
