Ryanair will bring 2 million tourists to Murcia within 3 years, according to an announcement made yesterday be the Regional Minister of Culture and Tourism, Pedro Alberto Cruz.
The Minister was speaking at the launch of a campaign to promote tourism in La Manga and Mar Menor, where he said how the 700'00 foreign tourists coming to the region is predicted to quadruple, providing that the regional government accepts the terms of the airline.
The Minister, along with his counterpart in the Ministry of Public Works, Antonio Sevilla, is in negotiations with all the airlines that currently fly to San Javier - and a few others that do not - to establish alternative routes to the new Corvera airport, scheduled to open in July. The opening of the new airport will coincide with the transfer of employees and services from San Javier, which will then be for the exclusive use of the military.
Cruz acknowledged that the negotiations had been difficult, with the current state of the economy dictating that all parties were working to tight margins, however, he pointed to the news of a customs area being established at Corvera as being a positive step for trade and industry at the airport.
The region of Murcia will also be hosting it's own stand at the FITUR tourism industry fair, which begins in Madrid tomorrow, where a number of meetings and presentations will promote the region to the industry and potential investors, before doors are open to the public over the weekend.
