El Pais has reported how the number of smokers has not fallen since the introduction of tougher ant-smoking laws at the start of last year.
These findings were based on the results of a survey undertaken by the Spanish Society of Neumology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR), which revealled how there has been slight rise in the number of smokers over the age of 13, to 20% of the population.
The Vice President of SEPAR commented that "The prevalence [of smokers] is not influenced by the law," adding that the number of younger smokers is increasing, "which indicates that prevention is not working." Among children,9% are passive smokers and of these, 51% are exposed to smoke in their own homes."The study also detailed how a total of 22% of all men and 18% of all women are smokers and, whilst the number of smokers had actually increased, the overall consumption had fallen slightly, down to an average of 12 cigarettes per induvidual smoker, per day.
It concluded that in the last 12 months 27% of smokers had tried to quit, with 14% failing to do so withing a 24 hour period, and 72% returning to their old habits within a month.
