20 Airlines interested in flying to Corvera

Over 100 local businesses working in, or associated with the Murcia toursim sector attended a seminar last night organized by the municipality of San Javier's department of tourism.

The seminar was also attended by the Councillor for Tourism & Beaches in San Javier, the Director General of Tourism, Enrique Ujaldón, and the Council's head of marketing.

The councilor for Tourism, Antonio M. Martinez, praised the policy of the region's department for "focusing on supporting both employees and the employer" and thanked them for their dedication to tourism in the San Javier area.

The airport of San Javier currently employs 80 workers directly, but an estimated 500 plus workers are expected to indirectly rely on the airport for their livelihoods. Whilst guarantees of employment have been given in transferring the 80 AENA employees across to the new airport at Corvera, much uncertainty surrounds the future of those not in direct employment. This has undertandlably left many business owners with uncertain futures.

On being asked whether the creation of the new airport at Corvera could actually result in an increase in visitors coming to the San Javier and wider Mar Menor area, the DG for Tourism responded that, "If this was not the case, the region would have failed", and that he was certain that the potential increase in passenger capacity at the new airport would ensure that a greater number of visitors to the area would be forthcoming.

It was also confirmed at the meeting that over 20 airlines, including Ryanair, have expressed an interest in flying to Corvera, with the establishment of many new routes to the region, significantly Russia.
