Consumers association urges those affected by Iberia cancellations to claim compensation

The Federation of Independent Users-Consumers (FUCI) has stated how passengers affected by the 127 flight cancellations due to the Iberia Pilots strike today have the right to a full refund of their tickets, including all costs and fees.

Today is the first of the days of strike action planned for this month, with others due to take place on the 17th, 20th, 24th and 29th.

The President of FUCI, Gustavo Samayoa, commented that the strike was "foreseeable" and therefore "not unavoidable, an assumption, fortuitous event or force majeure, which Iberia is required to compensate affected passengers for."

He also reminded passngers that "those affected by cancellations or long delays are entitled to assistance in the form of food, drink and accommodation if needed, until they reach their destination or return home."

He conyinued that "if companies do not fulfill their obligations, passengers should write to the airline or to AENA, as a way to acknowledge the non-compliance."

Samayoa urged passengers to keep all receipts for food and beverage and Hotel bills for making such a claim for compensation.

I have a flight alicante to Madrid Friday 4th May... connecting to Emirates flight to Thailand..4hr connection....I want to cancel my ticket with a full refund and get the train on Thursday 3rd May to Madrid and book a hotel for the night. I cannot afford to go to the airport on Friday and hope my flight is not cancelled. If it is cancelled Emirates will not refund me 720 euros as it is not their fault...I went to Iberia office at the airport today and they will only refund money if i wait at the airport on the day of the flight and it is cancelled...this is madness..Are they legally correct..Surely i have the right to cancel my flight now and get a refund as the pilots have officially called a strike...please advise or maybe give me somebody who can get me my money back from Iberia : 154 euros

By my calculations by the end of February there will have been 10 days of strike action by Iberia Pilots over the recent dispute. I wouldn't like to hazard a guess at the number of cancelled flights, or disrupted passengers, but I would imagine that if everybody effected submitted a compensation claim, that it would either bankrupt the airline - already trading on a 72 Million Euro loss last year - or cause them to be cut loose by IAG ?
