According to a report in today's El Pais, the downturn in the economy is forcing Spaniards to cut their outgoings, particularly with bills such as for mobile phones.
For the month of January alone, a total of 539'599 people changed their mobile telecomms provider in order to find a better deal - representing a record month for such transfers, according the Telecommunications Market Commission (CMT).
The CMT have attributed the sudden increase in such transfers to the fact that mobile phone customers are now able to change providers whilst retaining their old mobile phone number.
Orange and Movistar were the providers who lost the most market share, with Vodafone and Yoigo increasing their client numbers. Cellphone operators who rent bandwidth from the major providers were also reported to have increased their customer base.
