Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy attended a ceremony in the Madrid's Puerta del Sol, to pay tribute to the 192 victims of the terrorist bombings of March 11, 2004.
At 07:37am 9 years ago today a dozen explosions were detonated in a number of railway carriages as they neared the Atocha, El Pozo and Santa Eugenia stations.
Regional and local authorities also laid a wreath at the foot of the commemorative plaque outside the Real Casa de Correos in the Puerta del Sol, in gratitude to the annonymous heroes who helped the victims of the attacks.
The ceremony was also attended by members of the security forces, emergency and civil protection services and relatives of the dead and almost two thousand wounded left by the terrorist bombings.
The attack represented the most serious terrorist activity ever to have been committed in Spain, and came just 3 days before the country went to the polls to vote in the General Election. The bombings were largely thought to be constructive in seeing the ruling PP Government voted out of office in favour of the PSOE opposition.
The PM marked the occassion by speaking out against terrorism and affirming the country's continued support for the victims of terrorism.
