Spanish airport operators AENA have received a proposal to transform Alicante El Altet's old terminal 1 facilities into a shopping outlet centre for more than 100 shops.
Alicante based business, Aerovillage, have submitted a plans to convert the dormant old terminal into a major shopping venue with a variety of stores and a €40 MILLION investment which it hopes will create more than 650 jobs.
Submitted plans will cover all three levels, including the basement, of the building which has become dormant since the new terminal building and facilities were officially opened in March 2011.
Amongst new shops, the outlet aims to include restaurants, a hotel, indoor karting, aviation and formula one simulators.
Technicians from AENA had previously looked into the possibility of using the redundant terminal as an additional terminal to back up the new flagship facility, however it was decided that the new terminal could support up to 25 million passengers a year and wouldn't be cost effective to have both terminals operational.
Its current role is purely incidental for private jets and provides support functions to the main terminal.
The "Outlet Village" proposal would be a staged development bringing online the retails facilities initially followed by converting office space into a hotel at a later date.
