The General Secretary of UEFA has confirmed that if Bilbao is chosen as a host city for the 2020 European Cup, it is possible that the Spanish team may be based there.
Gianni Infantino was answering questions speculating that Athletico Bilbao's new San Mames stadium would be one of the 13 chosen across Europe to host matches at Euro 2020.
"Bilbao is a great city, a city of football and one that also has a new stadium," he told a press conference given on behalf of the UEFA Executive Committee. "The city chosen by the Spanish Football Federation must meet certain criteria in terms of stadium size and other aspects relating to hotels, airports, flight connections. And the four that have been proposed are compliant.
"And above all that counts the new stadium, as they have in Bilbao. "At least two of Spain's matches [should they qualify for the tournament] could be played at San Mames.
The UEFA Executive Committee will now review applications made by the different federations and chose 12 host cities to hold the group stage matches, with the 13th holdiang the semi-final and final.
Spain has presented 4 candidate cities, and has until 24th April to finalise all submissions, before a decision is announced on September 25th.
