Spain's national consumption of electricity fell sharply during 2009 as the economic crisis continues to take hold, according to a report released yesterday.
A spokesperson for UNESA - The Spanish Association of the Electricity Industry said that the consumption of electricity had fallen by 4.3 %in 2009, going on to mention how this has been caused by a fall in business consumption and household efforts to save money due to an uncertainty surrounding family income.
But in a year when climate change has been high on the world political agenda, UNESA had good news for Spain - the production of renewable energy grew by an impressive 15.3 %, due largely to an increase in the popularity of wind turbines.
Hydroelectric power also increased by 8.45-%, while traditional production based on carbon and gas decreased by 23.7 % and 9.1 % respectively and as a result of this carbon emissions caused by power generation were cut down by 17 %.
