Political Assassination Rocks Spain

 

Isabel Carrascao - a Partido Popular politician and head of the Provincial Council of Leon - has been shot dead in public earlier this afternoon in the City of Leon

A party spokeswoman confirmed that she had been shot several times, but declined to give further details at this time.

The Police said a woman had been detained over the death, whilst the Ministry of the Interior said how they did not believe the killing to be politically motivated.

"Everything points to it being a personal act of vengeance unrelated to her public position," said a ministry spokeswoman.

Both the PP and PSOE have cancelled plans to hold events tied to the European Parliament election campaign, including rallies in which PM Mariano Rajoy and opposition leader Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba were scheduled to participate.

"The Popular Party expresses its deepest sorrow and announces the suspension of all acts planned for today," it said in a statement.
