Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said on Wednesday that a new chapter heading could be opened with Turkey next week within the scope of negotiation talks between the EU and Turkey.
Spain's EU rotating presidency was discussed in the Spanish parliament. Spain will hand over presidency to Belgium on July 1.
Delivering a speech in the parliament, Zapatero reiterated Spain's support to Turkey's EU accession bid and said that a new chapter heading could be opened with Turkey next week.
Spain earlier promised that three or four chapter headings would be opened with Turkey during its presidency.
Turkey became an EU candidate country in December 1999. The union launched accession talks with Turkey on October 3, 2005.
