Following the opening of a new base at Barcelona’s El Prat airport, Ryanair have announced that unless costs are reduced, they intend to reduce the number of flights it runs to and from the nearby Girona and Reus airports.
Michael O’Leary, the airline’s director, says that unless the airline governing body, AENA, reduces the operating costs for smaller airports, he will cut the number of flights connecting the UK and Ireland with the Costa Brava and the province of Tarragona.
Mr O’Leary mentioned how Reus and Girona have comparable operating costs to major international terminals such as Madrid and Barcelona, and that Ryanair’s continued growth depended upon such airports maintaining reasonable costs.
