Many Spaniards are still suspicious of the motives of the Basque Coalition party,Bildu, however voters from the region report that the newly formed partnership is an important step toward ending terrorism. A poll conducted by Metroscopia for EL PAÍS recently reveals that Bildu looks set to win at least 18.5% of the votes in the Basque Country and Navarre, where candidates representing the party are standing.
Bildu, which was formed by the abertzale radical left and the legal parties Eusko Alkartasuna and Alternatiba, was allowed to field candidates after the Constitutional Court ruled in favor of the coalition earlier this month. The decision had previously been made against Bildu's standing by the attorney general, arguing that the group was an extension of terror group, ETA.
The PP have used the reversal of the decision to their advantage in their campaign, blaming the PSOE for allowing Bildu to run, in spite of the fact that the decision was made by lawyers as opposed to politicians.
However, 52% of Basque voters, believe that the creation of the coalition is a sincere attempt by the abertzale to renounce violence and condemn terrorism. The poll by Metroscopia also shows that 62% of Basque voters believe that the continuation of Bildu will bring around the end of ETA.
