The number of holidaymakers coming to Spain during April grew significantly, according to a report issued by the Ministry for Tourism earlier this week.
A total of 4.7 million foreign tourists arrived last month, an increase of 20.95% on the same period last year, making the total number of visitors for the year to date 13.8 million - an 8.5% increase on 2011.
However, the growth could be explained as being down to one, or all, of three factors:
- In 2010 the easter holiday was split over March and April, whereas in 2011 it fell firmly in April.
- The polictical unrest seen earlier this year in the popular holiday resorts of Tunisia and Egypt caused many to re-think their holiday destinations.
- The Icelandic volcanic eruption of April 2010 caused thousands of flights across europe to be cancelled, meaning many cancelled holiday.
Tourist number from the UK increased by 42% to reach 1.15 million, with Germany coming in second with an 11.4& growth in numbers and reaching 817,000 visitors.
The Canary Islands saw the largest growth, possibly due to their benfitting from the change of destination following the north-African unrest, with a total of 912,977 foreign tourists arriving in April, an increase of 19.3% on April 2010.
