Statistics released yesterday by the Spanish Association of Car and Van Manufacturuers ( Asociacion Española de Fabricantes de Automoviles y Camiones - ANFAC ) revealed how the country's new car registrations came to 78,913 for July, a drop of 4.0% from the 82,169 new cars registered in the same period last year.
New registrations for 2011 to date are now down 24.1% to 521,130 when compare to the January-July period of 2010, which stood at 686'331.
The top selling manufacturer for both last month and the year to date was SEAT, followed (for July) by Peugeot, Volkswagen, Renault and Opel. The top selling model of car for both July and the year to date was the Renault Mégane.
ANFAC explained the fall in new registrations : July 2010 saw registrations fall 24% with the ending of the Plan 200E incentive scheme. The weakness of current demand has led ANFAC to revise its full-year market forecast down to 830,000 units, a fall of 15.5% on the year, and the lowest number for 18 years.
