The PEVOLCA Committee on the Island of El Hierro is meeting again this morning to review the current situation on the Island following an increase in seismic activity over the weekend, and to evaluate the information, which has sometimes been conflicting. The Committee took the decision not to take any action yesterday, but instead to wait for a more revue of analysis and meeting today.
The total count of seismic activities is difficult to keep accurate due to their frequencies, however, yesterday there were 93 recorded earthquakes, with a further 41 already being recorded before 09.00 Hrs GMT this morning.
In addition to the frequency of activity, the intensity appears to growing with 2 quakes measuring greater than 2.0 on the richter scale alone this morning.Doubts have once again been raised about the safety of the Los Roquillos tunnel, which could hinder any attempts to evacuate the residents of the El Golfo area to the main town of Valverde to the North-East of the Island.
More news is expected later in the days once the details discussed in the meeting have been released.
This morning's Youtube clip shows a 3D graphical representation of the seismic activity that has occurred underneath the island between the 10th-30th October >>>
