A total of 16,000 workers drive on the runway of Madrid's Barajas airport, and as such the Spanish airport authority, AENA, yesterday introduced random breathalyser and speed limit tests.
Of the 700 drivers tested for alcohol yesterday, 8 of them - 1.19% returned a positive result.
The airport enforces a strict 30 km/hour speed limit for all vehicles on the runways and taxi lanes and the spot tests on Thursday showed that only 12% of those who broke the speed limit drove as fast as 60 km/hour.
AENA spokesperson, Ana Navarrete, said that speeding was the determinate factor in most of the accidents at the airport, most of which were minor.
