The Town of Lleida, Catalunya, was one of the first in Spain to outlaw the use of the Burka in public places, claiming that it made identification of it's residents impossible.
The council has now implemented measure to pass fines of up to 600 Euros for those who insist of following this religious code and wearing the traditional integral veil.
The mayor of Lleida, Marta Camps, stressed that the measure was intended to ‘educate' and not ‘punish' and would always seek to advise and educate such ‘offenders' whenerever and whenever possible bfore imposing the fines , which will range from 30 to 600 Euros.
